There is simply no reason to watch this, no matter if you were a fan of the book, the original movie, or President of the Benjamin Bratt fan club. There are massive and easily avoidable lapses in logic, consistently terrible dialogue, clichés upon clichés, and more insipid but important-sounding techno-babble than you could find in an entire Star Trek series. It doesn't just go down hill – it leaps off a cliff. What's amazing is how much worse it gets as time goes on. McCormack is the only character having any fun, the only one with a sense of humor and even though his storyline is equally preposterous – it's the only glimmer of light in this whole sad affair. He's so out of place in this movie, but eventually becomes the most entertaining aspect of it. Eric McCormack plays Jack Nash, who is apparently the protagonist from an '80s show about a reporter who was abducted and placed in The Andromeda Strain. There's actually a funny bit of irony here, because Andromeda Strain has been turned into ham-fisted warning about the damage we're doing to our environment, while Michael Crichton has joined the increasingly small group of scientists who insist that our environment is just fine. Instead, it's a convoluted story about a disease that's actually a virus of some kind sent from the future to warn us about the damage we're doing to our environment. If only that executive had said "make it make sense!" or "make it vaguely interesting!" we may have had something worth watching. These are punctuated by random moments such as the decontamination scene – which seems to exist for no other reason than to show some of Miller's side-boob. What starts out as a serviceable disease thriller descends into a preposterous and dreary mess that bogs down in one boring and meaningless expository chat fest after another.
